VOIP

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a method of taking audio analog signals, like the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet. VoIP can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls.

From a practical standpoint, by using some of the free VoIP software that is available to make Internet phone calls, you can bypass the phone company (and its charges) entirely. There are adaptors that enable you to plug your existing telephone directly into your into your Ethernet connections.

Additionally, there are IP phones that have the RJ-45 Ethernet connectors and can plug directly into your router.
